What You Need to Know Before Attending Your First Retreat

Attending your first retreat can be an exciting yet daunting experience.

Whether you're diving into a full-on retreat or simply carving out some "me time," it’s essential to take small steps and clearly understand your goals. After attending retreats for 10+ years, here's my top tips to help you prepare and make the most of your retreat experience.

Set Your Intentions

Before you attend your first (or 100th) retreat, take some time to reflect on what you hope to achieve. Are you seeking inner peace, clarity, soul transformation, or simply a break from your daily routine? Your intentions will guide your plans and help you make the most of your time away. Knowing your goals can shape your retreat experience, ensuring it meets your needs and expectations.

Find Joy in Simple Activities

A retreat is all about finding moments of joy and peace. Engage in activities that bring you happiness, such as getting lost in a good book, meditating, or taking a walk in nature. These small steps can significantly impact your overall retreat experience, helping you to unwind and reconnect with yourself. Building in that happiness will be a gamechanger for the messages you get from the retreat.

Pack Light and Smart

When preparing for your retreat, it can be overwhelming to decide what you should pack! I recommend keeping your packing list simple. Pack your clothes that you feel most confident in with the perfect balance of comfiness. My essential items include:

  • Comfy Clothes: Choose outfits that allow you to relax and move freely.

  • Water Bottle: Stay hydrated to maintain your energy levels.

  • Journal: Use it to jot down any insights, feelings, or reflections that arise during your retreat.

By packing light, you can focus more on your retreat activities and less on managing your belongings.

Stay Open to New Experiences

A retreat is an opportunity to step out of your comfort zone. Be open to trying new things, whether it's a different yoga pose, spending quiet time alone, or participating in unfamiliar activities. This openness can lead to personal growth and new discoveries about yourself, which can be an intention you wish to get out of the retreat.

Treat Your Retreat as an Experiment

Approach your retreat with a sense of curiosity and experimentation. This can help take the first time jitters out of the experience. Take notes of what resonates with you and what doesn’t. This mindset allows you to refine your ideal retreat experience over time. Remember, your needs and preferences may evolve, and that's perfectly okay.

Disconnect from Technology

To fully immerse yourself in the present moment, try to disconnect from technology. Start with short intervals, like 15 minutes, and gradually increase the time as you become more comfortable. This digital detox can enhance your ability to focus on your retreat activities and deepen your relaxation.

Reflect and Journal

Reflecting on your retreat experience through journaling can offer valuable insights. Writing about your thoughts and emotions helps you navigate your inner world and gain a deeper understanding of yourself. This practice can be particularly enlightening and therapeutic. This can be done after each session, each day, or after the entire retreat.

Embrace the Journey

Stepping away from the busyness of life can be overwhelming, but it's all part of the journey. Be gentle with yourself as you explore this new territory. Remember, it's okay to feel uncertain or uncomfortable at times. These feelings are natural and can lead to profound personal growth.

Incorporate Peace into Your Daily Routine

After returning to your daily life, consider integrating elements of peace and serenity from your retreat into your routine. Adjust your morning habits or find moments throughout the day to reset and reflect. Pay attention to what brings you joy and identify aspects of your life that may need to change.

Embarking on your first retreat is a delightful and enlightening adventure. Approach it with a sense of curiosity and openness, and you'll likely discover new dimensions of peace and happiness.

Remember to be kind to yourself and enjoy the journey, embracing every moment as a step towards greater self-awareness and fulfillment.
